Patient Flow Management = Systems Control
At MS2, we believe that the reason Emergency Departments become overcrowded is that their current operational model is not efficient enough to retain control of patient flow when the department gets busy and/or admitted ER patients are being boarded. Control, and overcrowding prevention, is only gained through aggressive and preemptive patient flow management systems..
Perception = Patient Satisfaction
At MS2, we believe that the only way an Emergency Department can dramatically increase patient satisfaction is by developing the ability to see patients and start treatment shortly after arrival. This is the key factor in the perception of ED customers. TVs, valet parking, patient advocates, classy interior design, and similar “services” are of little importance to them otherwise.
Cross-Functional Change Management = Accountable Results
At MS2 we believe that the only way an institution can solve their Emergency Department related challenges is by fundamentally changing the way in which the ED, the ancillary departments and the inpatient units collaborate and are held accountable for effective patient flow. The ED by itself cannot execute the cross-functional changes needed nor demand the accountability necessary from all involved.
Bottom Up Commitments = Empowerment
At MS2, we believe that the only way an organization can gain the staff buy-in, cooperation and commitment necessary to transform patient flow operations is to have the operational staff itself (not the managers) drive the change from the “bottom-up”. As long as the staff understands the outcomes expected and work within the established parameters and constraints, they should be allowed to innovate processes and implement rapid changes with no red tape or bureaucratic hurdles.
The approach to Hospital operations transformation and patient flow management described before has served every single one of our clients well. In fact, most of them have reached top national quartile ED performance metrics. We can confidently state that we are one of only a few, if not the only, Hospital operations improvement company in the country able to state and validate that claim.
